Job Description

Lead the research of application development of advanced technologies targeted at achieving business goals in the Global markets that QBE operates. Responsible for establishing, maintaining, and growing the technical capabilities needed by the research lab, including identifying, researching, testing and developing advanced technologies through lab experiments. This position will spend the majority of time in a lab environment.

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Oversee technical aspects of the lab, including identifying, researching, testing and developing advanced technologies through lab experiments
  • Oversee technical lab infrastructure, systems and technical best practices
  • Oversee and provide development operations support to one or more Lab teams
  • Research potential technical and architectural approaches for upcoming Lab experiments and present findings to senior members of the development team for review
  • Contribute to the development of an engineering culture that rewards creativity, collaboration and curiosity
  • Guide junior developers by mentoring, developing, training, and evaluating team and ensure continual effectiveness of team deliverables
  • Manage budgeted resources by anticipating expenditures, accurately forecasting resource needs/costs and  properly accounting for expenses to meet requirements and achieve fiscal responsibility
  • Contribute to a positive environment by demonstrating cultural expectations and guiding leaders to reward performance and value “can do” people, accountability, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, continuous improvement, collaboration, creativity and fun

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Management Information Systems
  • Master's Degree (Preferred)

Experience

  • 7 years relevant experience with two or more of the following languages:  Java, JavaScript, C#, PHP, C++, Python, C, SQL, Ruby, Objective-C, Perl, .NET, Visual Basic, R, Swift, METLAB, Scala, Pascal, SAS, D
  • Experience with Enterprise Integration / API Integration work

Knowledge

  • Advanced working knowledge of a variety of software languages:  Java, JavaScript, C#, PHP, C++, Python, C, SQL, Ruby, Objective-C, Perl, .NET, Visual Basic, R, Swift, METLAB, Scala, Pascal, SAS, D
  • Advanced working knowledge of technical research
  • Advanced working knowledge of software development lifecycle and relevant milestones; project management methodology
  • Advanced working knowledge of technology and procedures, languages and related components

  • Design, set-up, and operate, complex research projects involving application of advanced technologies
  • Determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes
  • Manage large-scale, complex research application development projects

  • Infrequent (approximately 1-4 trips annually)

Physical demands

General office jobs

  • Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is not substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Must have the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. Must be able to operate basic office equipment including telephone, headset and computer. Incumbent must be able to lift basic office equipment up to 20 pounds.
