Job Description

Support Legal function by communicating with key stakeholders, conducting in-depth research on assigned projects, organizing complex information and drafting recommendations to assist with corporate legal correspondence and proceedings.

Primary responsibilities

• Support in-house legal team responsible for managing all claims and business litigation against the company and insurance policy opinion work, including intake, assignment, legal research and drafting, discovery, trial preparation, reporting, and maintaining calendars and databases.

• Provide guidance by identifying legal issues, conducting in-depth research, analyzing complex issues and legal precedent and drafting position letters and recommendations under the supervision of attorneys

• Collaborate with team by sharing information and seeking guidance on complex legal questions and inquiries to foster information sharing and thorough analysis of options for recommendations

• Manage multiple legal projects by planning and prioritizing assigned work, drafting required correspondence and delegating tasks as appropriate to meet deadlines and achieve desired result

• Oversee timely submission of required filings by monitoring and tracking filing statuses and communicating with regulators to ensure organizational compliance with multiple states' requirements

• Provide legal foresight by tracking current legal developments and identifying and escalating relevant issues to plan solutions, responses and necessary updates of organizational policies and procedures

• Adopt QBE values in personal work behaviors, decision-making, contributions and interpersonal interactions; manage own career development by soliciting feedback and valuing other perspectives

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED

• 10 years of relevant experience

• Paralegal work in a law firm or legal department; legal research and writing

• Paralegal certificate or degree from an ABA-accredited paralegal program

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience

• Degree in paralegal studies or related field.

• Insurance claims, coverage and litigation experience.

• Proficient with Concordance, Summation, Relativity or similar tools.

• Database creation and management.

• Discovery, including e-discovery.

Knowledge:

• Legal research and writing principles

• Laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process

• Current and possible future policies, practices, trends, technology and information affecting the business and organization; knows how the business works

• Westlaw; Microsoft Excel, Share Point, Word and Access

Skills:

• Legal research databases/programs/tools

• Complex legal research and writing

• Inquisitiveness and logical and structured analytical reasoning skills

• Anticipate future consequences and trends and create accurate forecasts and models

• Manage multiple projects or responsibilities concurrently and effectively

• Analyze and synthesize information to form options and recommendations

Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is not substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Must have the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. Must be able to operate basic office equipment including telephone, headset and computer. Incumbent must be able to lift basic office equipment up to 20 pounds.
